Lacroix files for bankruptcy

I'm saddened by this news as he came the victim of this global economic crisis. Still remember one of the characters in Absolute Fabulous would always mention, "It's Lacroix."


To me, Christian Lacroix is often associated with haute couture among other 'big' names. He was inspired to be a curator till his wife who encouraged him to draw. He has also designed for theater, opera and dance and acted as curator for fashion exhibits, including one currently at the National Museum of Singapore.

I feel that I'm very fortunate to view his works in SG as this is a rare opportunity for the exhibits to travel to the humid SG. This is the first time for this exhibit travels out of France. The exhibition will end on 7 June 2009.

Thanks to SG govt and FR govt signed a 'cultural - exchange' 10-year contract. In addition, admission is free for students. It's a bonus. BTW, 31 May is International Museum Day and all entries to museums are complementary (I think). Take advantage of this opportunity to go to one if you havent been to one yet.

I joined a guided tour provided by the museum for a general overview of the exhibit. Later, SL and I went on a free and easy by ourselves. I felt like a kid in a candy store. From the exhibits, I do understand his vision through my mundane thinking and could see his point of view when he's designing his theatrical costume especially the usage of colors and the details (the details can be seen even if you are at the last row in the theatre).

According to the guide, of the tour, most of the theatre groups that approached him didnt have sufficient funds and he would use materials that we would not think it's possible for these costumes. There is one costume which material is made of paper. There is a costume that I like very much coz it has modern elements and these materials are not hard to find.

Call me naive...but I thought it was a generous gesture of him to do so apart from the fame and he could choose otherwise. Hopefully, somebody will help him out though everybody is currently cutting cost. Coz haute couture is a 'lost' art though it's expensive and nobody's buying. Sounds contradictory but what he had created are art pieces.

My Not Exactly Cheap Sunday

Wanted to dress up for this outing. However, the weather was cruel. It was hot and humid to even take the public transportation. There was no difference when I was in the train. It was just as hot. Fortunately, I managed to seek comforts of the air-con in the National Museum to view the exhibits from the museum featuring The Christian Lacroix - the Costumier exhibition. Well, the entrance fee is SGD 8 and I didnt pay a single cent coz I had waved my student pass. Hooray for saving moolah!

Arriving the exhibits rather early coz we wanted to join the guided tour at 1630 hrs. Suddenly there was a huge crowd emerging from nowhere and followed the guide. Argh! Really hated to go to the museum during the weekends as it was simply covered with families and kids running around screaming. The noise was so bad that we simply couldnt hear what the guide's voice. Some of the visitors were busy talking among themselves. It was kinda distracting. After the tour, we decided to take a round by ourselves.

The exhibit closed at 1800 hrs and we decided to head to Tao's restaurant (one of our favourite haunt). SL and I decided to have a nice treat monthly and this was one of them. Then I decided to go shop around at my favourite shops located in PS. Bought a nose pack from Daiso and a twit jacket.

To my horror, one of the buttons is gone and cursing at myself for not checking the jacket thoroughly. Argh! That's not exact a great ending of my Sunday! Just wanna call the store asap. Cant wait for the sun to rise!

80s is back

I'm watching The Wedding Singer at this moment and all the soundtracks in the movie have nostalgia effect on me. Most of these songs still give me good vibes and a couple of sing-along such as Madonna's hit Holiday and Boy George.

In my opinion, shoulder pads will be in rage for at least 2 seasons . Argh! Nightmare came when I wear my first jacket with 'huge' shoulder pads. It was a hand-me-down from my auntie. Then there was a DIY moment when I removed the shoulder pads and sleeves so that I could re-create a vest fashioned out from a picture in a magazine. That was my prom look. It's was very 80s and these items (vest & shirt were thrown; skirt was lost; shoes were platforms) were in my wardrobe no more. Dr Martens boots (8 eye type in black) were in trend, too. I had a pair and wore it till I didnt wanna wear it anymore. Of course, my mum threw them away.

Oh dear, I couldnt imagine wearing shoulder pads again. May try to source a bf jacket from thrift stores. However, thrifting is still not cheap in SG and I will give Dr Martens a miss this time.

Currently, I'm too excited to sleep coz I'm visiting The Christian Lacroix - the Costumier exhibition and it's on display outside France for the first time. So looking forward to it. Have a wonderful weekend, everybody!
