I dont think that I'm a green conscious person and doing enough. What I can do is constantly remind and start from myself.
Whenever I go shopping, I will try to use a carrier bag. Alternatively, I will use either the plastic bag for my earlier purchases to put my stuff or stuff everything in my bag.
I have stopped buying CDs and try to listen to songs online. Save moolah and save the earth. Imagine the packaging used for the CDs, DVDs, etc...Hey, I'm no saint but I'm to do something as an individual to help save Earth in my small little ways.
If there's nobody at home, we'll switch all the electricity unless it's for certain vital equipment such as the fridge.
I try to cut down on my book purchases and try to read it online. Reading but through different medium.
Technology is constantly changing but it doesnt mean we need to get the latest and newest model of the latest gadget. I had read somewhere that we use so much natural sources just to produce 1 laptop. My laptop is approx 4 years or even older. Perhaps, I cant afford and it's not spoilt. Hence, neednt buy at this moment.
I've a gf who is just a bag whore as I do except that she owns more branded stuff than me. Hence, I'm the receiving party for some of her bags. Mind you, there are still in good working condition and I'm fine with carrying hand-me-downs. Some of these bags are not cheap either.
For plastic containers, these depend on the sizes. For shampoo bottles, I try to cut these into stationery containers. For food containers, these can be used to store my accessories coz of its clarity.
Here are my ways to 'save' the earth. I do understand the idea of recycling is a conscious one and everybody needs to play a part. It's a prominent way of life in the West and some parts in Asia but it's not so in SG. Coz the only way to entice the majority of people to do so is through monetary rewards. Even if there are the recycled bins are placed in front of the block of flats, nobody bothers to do coz it's to troublesome to separate the different materials. The best part some of the recycled bins are 'forced' open by opportunists who in turn sell them to the 'rag and bone' dealers. In turn, these people sell them to the third world countries. It's true but it's kinda sick coz these bins are there for the purpose of recycling.
The lesser we consume, the lesser we use those precious natural resources. Besides, having more things dont necessary mean that you will be full spiritually. Perhaps, for some. Generally, one will still feel empty inside. By living less, it doesnt mean that you wouldnt live a fuller life.
What I do know is I still wanna my kids and grandchildren to see what I see in this world and in this lifetime such as polar bears (sans the miseries and sufferings of this world). After all, it's a 'wonderful' world. Isnt it?
